This is odd. On one hand I am quite pleased that Congress is poised to pass its first meaningful tax cuts in more than a generation. Perhaps I’m old-fashioned but the thought of keeping more of the money I rightfully earn brings a smile to my face. I’m not really sure what other reaction I should have.
But the GOP-authored Tax Bill that cleared the Senate this morning is launching Biblical levels of angst from Democrats. You would think their thirst for dramatic melancholy would have been slaked by last week’s Net Neutrality ruling. But no. Their ability to spew doomsday-fueled hyperbole seems limitless. Three more years of Trump will likely test those limits, but I’ve no doubt they’re up to the challenge.
Its one thing to oppose the Tax Bill on the basis that it adds more than a trillion dollars to the national debt. That is a MORE than fair point. But the objections from the left have little to do with that. Indeed, those who ARE bringing it up were suspiciously silent when the debt spiraled from 2008-2016, so their opinions are meaningless.
No, the bulk of the left’s objections appear to go to the very heart of the nature of taxation.
Unbelievable. GOP just pulled off the biggest bank heist in US history & they’re delivering the loot – >$1 trillion out of our national treasury – to the wealthiest Americans & big corporations. We must fight back harder than ever for our “We the People” vision of our democracy. pic.twitter.com/fAXi0fC2yh

This is an obscene view. This duly-elected Senator thinks the money you earn actually belongs to the “national treasury,” and you get some of it back at the whim of The State. I’m going to also guess that he believes your fundamental rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness are granted by the Government.
It should also be noted that bank heists generally don’t end up with you and I keeping more of our money.
Ah but there’s more to this. MUCH more. You see this Tax Cut Bill also eliminates the Individual Mandate—the funding cornerstone for that paean to big government, Obamacare.
The left is giving a predictable reaction to having the carpet pulled out from under the cornerstone of the leviathan upon which their Statist dreams rest.
Because Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act failed, they’re trying to turn this tax bill into a health care bill by repealing the ACA’s individual mandate. 13M more people will become uninsured in the next decade, and many face premium increases of up to 10%.

A learned man would conclude that not being forced to purchase a product is NOT the same as having that product taken away from you. Actually, someone with an IQ eclipsing room temperature would come to that conclusion.
Ironically, Senator Harris, if your party didn’t have to lie about the Individual Mandate being a tax in order for it to pass Constitutional muster, it would not likely have been included in the tax bill. Hate that for ya.
Then there is the reliably-execrable Joy Reid to put a ribbon on today’s Armageddon Two: Electric Bugaloo.
They’re literally stealing from you, America, and stuffing the money into their own pockets. If you don’t see that, I can’t help you.
— Joy Reid (@JoyAnnReid) December 20, 2017
Again, I would point out that it is curious for a “thief” to leave you with more money in your pocket at the end of your encounter—but you do you, Joy.
The saddest thing is; all this foolish and intellectually dishonest demagoguery will resonate with many people. It is depressing to realize that such a large percentage of the population has been brainwashed to the point where they actually believe a tax cut is “stealing” from us.
It is depressing to realize that generations of suggesting that all things belong to government, who then munificently hand them back to us, has woven itself so strongly into the American consciousness.
If you are suffering from a case of the vapors because you will get to keep more of the money you’ve earned…then I’ve got nothing for you. You are too far gone to be helped.
If you are still in a funk, I would simply remind you that federal tax rates are minimum levels. You can send more back to the government if you remain troubled.
